My Samarivan celebrates all the carers who are often unpaid, and who look after loved ones as My Mum does for my Dad, who sadly has Alzheimer’s. The blue forget me not flowers are for them. Caring for loved ones can be a lonely task, and they too need to be cared for. I’m also celebrating my teens (and all young people) who along with many other young people missed out in the covid years, which has impacted the social and emotional health of a generation. Spending time together, being together, picking up the phone, a day out, all impact us positively. The gilded gold ‘Kintsugi’ line is inspired by the ancient Japanese art of repair. this line represents the healing that takes place from talking.
As teacher, parent, daughter and as me, I have seen and experienced a variety of mental health challenges which have impacted on so many lives. I feel that talking, and perhaps more importantly listening, is the biggest factor that can help others. Knowing that the Samaritans are always there 24/7 is another emergency number to use, share with others, or to encourage others to use. Mental health challenges present themselves in many ways, sometimes it’s also hard to see your own struggles, and we rely on each other to ask us if we’re okay. #asktwice
