The painting was created using oil on canvas, building up layers upon layers of texture and often scraping back the paint to reveal previous marks and colours. I apply the paint using brushes but also work with palette knives and rags to wipe and scrape the paint. The painting is of a 60's campervan painted in the signature colour of the Samaritans. I decided to use the beach as a background as when I am immersed in nature and often next to water I feel most relaxed and at ease.
I understand and respect the incredible work that Samaritans do to support people in hours of darkness and I can relate to this experience as life is not always full of happy moments. I wanted to make a contribution by creating my 'Samarivan' to hopefully help raise money for such an important charity that is becoming increasingly more important as people experiencing severe mental health problems are on the rise in the modern society we live in.
Bio
Andrew Field was born in Solihull and has painted all of his life; he now paints from his garden studio in Stratford Upon Avon. Andrew received a 1st Class Honours Degree from Lancaster University in 2001 and has exhibited regularly in the UAE and UK at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, The Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Society of Marine Artists and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters at The Mall Galleries in London. Andrew moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2004 and painted on the beaches of Abu Dhabi until his return to the UK in 2015. His love of the natural world and his deep-rooted passion for rivers and the sea has led him to painting this subject repeatedly and to develop a strong following of collectors in the United Arab Emirates as well as the UK. Andrew's paintings of Abu Dhabi documented the organic, raw beauty of remote parts of the coastline and he continues to search for isolated areas of the British landscape that are unspoilt. Andrew paints with oils and uses eco-friendly diluents and mediums that are plant-based and derive from sustainable sources, which aligns with his ethical approach and interest in preserving and celebrating the natural environment.
